Update on the 5 Western Avenue Rehabilitation Project

The Former Cambridge Police Headquarters located at 5 Western Avenue is being converted into the new location of the Cambridge Housing Authority Offices along with the new location of the City of Cambridge’s Multi-Service Center and Community Learning Center. Storage space will also be made available for the Cambridge Election Commission at the renovated site. The property is being developed by the Cambridge Housing Authority with funds from the City of Cambridge. Upon completion of the rehabilitation of the property the Cambridge Housing Authority will lease a portion of the property from the City. Exterior repairs will be made in compliance with conditions established by the Cambridge Historical Commission.
In early October of 2011, abatement and interior demolition will begin along with the replacement of key utility lines on Green Street. This work is considered Phase One, or the “Early Work”, of the renovation project and is expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year 2011.
Full construction of the new City Offices and offices for the Cambridge Housing Authority is expected to begin in early 2012.
