The second Mark Sandman Memorial Concert will take place at Pacific Park, at Sidney St. and Brookline Ave. near Central Square, Cambridge MA on Sunday, September 27, from 1 to 7 pm. The first was on July 25 of 1999, just weeks after the Morphine frontman’s untimely passing onstage at the Nel Nome del Rock festival in Palestrina, Italy. July 3, 2009 marked the tenth anniversary of Sandman’s death, and Sept. 24, 2009 would have been his 57th birthday.
As well as celebrating the life and work of this favorite son of the Cambridge and Boston music scene, the Memorial Concert will focus attention on the Mark Sandman Music Project, based in the newly renovated Arts in the Armory building in Somerville. The Music Project is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which seeks to foster recreational, education and artistic goals by expanding young people’s opportunities to participate in music.
The concert site will include a fund-raising store selling CDs donated to the Music Project by musicians from across the country; an online auction adminstrated by charitybuzz.com of items including two tickets and aftershow passes to the premiere of Mark Walhberg’s upcoming film “The Fighter”; two tickets and backstage passes to an upcoming Chris Difford/Squeeze concert; a signed print of Sandman by noted poster artist Joshua Budich (inset); one of a kind hand-bound volume of prints of Sandman’s art- work; a “box’o’fun” containing items from Eugene Mirman, John Hodgman and David Cross; a half hour interview with mega-casting agent Sheila Jaffe; and a trip to Jamaica. Sponsors include Harmonix, who will have a Beatles Rock Band stand at the Festival and will raffle products. All proceeds will go to the Music Project.
The concert will include Sandman’s music as performed by Orchestra Morphine, the Elastic Waste Band and Treat Her Right, featuring various combinations of Morphine members Billy Conway, Dana Colley and Jerome Deupree; David Champagne and Jim Fitting of Treat Her Right; Mike Rivard of Club d’Elf; Russ Gershon and Tom Halter of the Either/Orchestra and Evan Harriman of the Coots. Vocals will be handled by Jeremy Lyons, Laurie Sargent, Christian McNeill and other special guests.
Also on board are Zili Misik, an all-female world music octet whose repertoire spans many languages and styles; Mean Creek, who blend driving and droning hard guitars with a folkish vocal sensibility; up and coming Faces on Film; Leedz Edutainment presents hip hop artists Rite Hook, Amadeus the Stampede, and Blak Madeen; Mariachi Internationale; and the Zumix Diversity Band, a student group who have benefited from the Music Project by recording at Hi-N-Dry studios, founded by Mark Sandman.
The festivities will commence with a parade from Mark Sandman Square, at the corner of Mass Ave and Brookline Ave out- side of the Middle East Restaurant, led by Mickey Bones and his Hot Tamale Brass Band, beginning at 12:30 pm.
