Part of 20!! in 2011
The 20th Birthday of The Dance Complex
In continued celebration of 20 years of helping make Central Square the dance capital of New England, The Dance Complex is offering an amazing concert of faculty choreography performed by students and teachers together.
ABC DANCE will be held on Saturday 12 November at 8:00pm and Sunday, 13 November at 7:00pm in the historic Odd Fellows Hall in Cambridge at 536 Mass Ave, Central Square. A donation of $20 per person is requested; reservations (call 617.547.9363) are suggested.
The Julie Ince Thompson Theatre, named in memory of an iconic dancer/actor and former Member of the Board of Directors of The Dance Complex, will be the venue for a diverse array of premiers and favorites.
Danny Swain is choreographing a new jazz-funk piece for his class, danced to music by (who else?) Britney Spears. A breathtaking ballet by Liz Lapuh, Doubt will get its premier, performed by Kim Steigmeyer and James Banta. There will be Belly Dance with Johara and a street-funk work, Wish You Were Here by Honey Blonder. Ramon de los Reyes will present a large Flamenco piece,Por Alegrias, with live music. Fatou-Carol Sylla and her drummers will add a heart (and feet) pounding dance with roots in West Africa.
All this, and more, is in celebration of the 20th Birthday of The Dance Complex.
The Dance Complex is an artist run, volunteer-based community of dancers, organized over 20 years ago to rescue the Odd Fellows Hall and secure it for the movement arts. It has received many award and grants over the years, none as meaningful as the continued devotion of the dancers, professional and novice, young and not so, diverse and wonderful, who call it Home.
It is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is supported, in part by the
Massachusetts Cultural Council, a State Agency
that receives support from the NEA.
